He learned his craft by performing in vaudeville shows and touring road shows. Gilpin first achieved national fame in 1920, when he played the lead role in Eugene O'Neill's The amperor kones Gilpin's talents shone in this play and made him one of the first black actors to gain a wide following on the American stage.
